October 12, Sunday Gleaning Farm Visit Day 10am-12pm. We'll be picking vegetables that have been left behind in the field, and then they will be donated to the hungry. Bring a bag lunch, lots of water, sun protection and clothes you can get dirty.
     
July 18 or 20 TBA Full Moon BBQ Potluck for Garden of Eve CSA members Come to the farm from near and far to enjoy meeting each other and eating some of those great organic foods. Show off your new recipes and enjoy a leisurely meal at the farm while building community. RSVP to farmer@gardenofevefarm.com or 631-722-8777.

Organic Berry Growing and Farm Tour, followed by Potluck BBQ & Long Island Growers Group meeting of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA-NY)

Makinajian Farm, 276 Cuba Hill Rd, Huntington, is a diverse, 4 acre certified organic farm, one of the last working farms in Huntington. Two generations of the Makinajian family work together growing organic blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, cut flowers, and a wide range of vegetables and herbs, as well as laying hens and meat birds for their retail store located on the farm. Join the NOFA Long Island Chapter afterwards as we enjoy Makinajian Farm's own rotisserie chickens and elect Chapter officers for 2008-2009.  Please bring a potluck dish to share.  $5 NOFA members, $15 non-members.

 

DIRECTIONS:  From the west, take the LIE to Exit 51 or Northern State Parkway East to exit 42N to Deer Park Ave (Rte 231). Head North and bare right when road splits to stay on Deer Park Rd. Road merges onto Jericho Turnpike (25E). At first traffic light turn left onto Elwood Rd (CR-10). Second traffic light on Elwood, turn left onto Cuba Hill Rd. The farm is about a quarter mile on left.

Exploration Experience for ages 3-5

Exciting, enriching week-long summer programs for children ages 3-8.

 

Age-appropriate activities your child is likely to enjoy are:

  • Picking and eating farm-fresh fruits and veggies!
  • Collecting eggs and caring for farm animals including goats, sheep, chickens and turkeys
  • Exploring nature on the farm
  • Planting seeds and learning how things grow
  • Cooking some basic dishes with farm produce
  • Working with wool from our own sheep and natural dyes found around the farm

Kids will enjoy the small group size, with no more than 6 kids!

Exploration Experience for ages 5-8

Aug 2, Sat, 11am-2pm Bee Fabulous Organic Beekeeping Workshop and Mead Festival, Hamlet Organic Garden (HOG), Bellport NY

First we'll learn about bees and their place on an organic farm, and sample some HOG wildflower honey with bee keepers  Desmond Lowe and Judy Calloway of Calloway and Lowe Apiary. Then with Matt Bollerman and Matt Bobiak (official HOG homebrewers) we'll learn about the history of mead, sample some local, Long Island brews, and sample our own meads from last year's Mead Day.  We will start a must, rack a mead to secondary, add herbs, spices, fruits, and bottle a mead from secondary, showing the entire mead-building process. Find out more and directions at www.hamletorganicgarden.org

August 10, Sunday Open Farm Day & Tomato Picking for CSA members 10am-4pm. Not necessary to stay the whole day, though we try to coordinate it so people all arrive around 11am. Bring a bag lunch, lots of water, sun protection and clothes you can get dirty. We will also try to do a family work project so you can get a taste of what farm work is like.
August 19, Tuesday,   5 pm Twilight Meeting and Organic Variety Trial Presentation at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Long Island Horticultural Research Center (LIHREC).

 


Come see what varieties of broccoli, cauliflower, colored peppers and sweet corn grow best under organic conditions! Sandra Menasha, Vegetable/Potato Specialist, will treat the public to an insider’s tour of the LIHREC research fields and share with us the results of her recent organic research projects.  The Center is located on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow, on the south side of the road across from the Dorothy Flint 4H Camp. Sun Sept 7, 10am-4pm North Fork Foodie Tour to benefit NF Reform Synagogue Garden of Eve will be one of 14 tour stops who will be offering behind-the-scenes tours every hour on the half hour from 11:30am-3:30pm, demonstrations and samples to the many visitors we expect to see on Sunday, September 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
