Volunteer Guidelines
THE WORK WEEK
We work Monday through Saturday, and can take volunteers at almost any time. Once you decide you're interested in volunteering, email farmer@gardenofevefarm.com or call (631) 523-6608 and let us know when you'd like to come out. Sometimes we take volunteers on Sunday as well (though we won’t be there to work with you, because Sunday is our day off). We ask that you plan to spend the whole day, from 8am until approximately 4-8 pm (we are flexible if transportation plans require a slightly different schedule). This will give you a good taste of what a typical workday is like on a working farm (not just an educational or “hobby” farm, or petting zoo).
TRANSPORTATION
The Long Island Railroad leaves Penn Station and goes to the Riverhead Station (Ronkonkoma Line) several times a day (fare is about $15), which is a $10 taxi ride from the farm (check schedule at www.mta.info/lirr or www.lirr42.mta.info/index.asp). The Hampton Jitney private bus line picks up along 2nd Avenue in Manhattan and also goes to Riverhead (fare about $18, www.hamptonjitney.com), and the bus stop is also about a $10 taxi ride from the farm. Taxi companies in the area include Moonlight Taxi (631)
727-5800 and Four Ones
Taxi (631) 287-1800.
Wednesday and Saturday are days we go into NYC for CSA dropoffs, so we may be able to drop you off/pick you up along the route, particularly if you live near one of our CSAs (check CSA page).
DRESS
Please wear closed-toe shoes (sneakers or boots) and clothes you can get dirty (long pants are not a bad idea) as well as a sun hat or sunscreen. If it is raining or you will be staying for several days, bring rain gear.
FOOD & DRINK
Bring a water bottle and sufficient water (at least a liter) and a bag lunch. While volunteering you are welcome to free raw produce to eat, and we have some snacks and sodas for sale at our farmstand.
LONGER STAYS
If you would like to volunteer for more than one day (people have come for anything from 2 days to 2 weeks) we are likely to have housing available for you in our farmhouse where our apprentices live. The house is furnished and we supply bedding, but ask that you wash everything before you leave. We will supply free produce but you are responsible for other food items. Let us know when you want to come, and we can check availability.
Hope to see you soon!
